Be Mine...At Vu's
Sunday 12 February 2012
My fiancé travels a lot for work, so when he’s in Dubai, we like to make the most of our time together. Cue an evening at Vu’s restaurant, in the iconic Jumeirah Emirates Towers.
Having never been to Vu’s before, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d heard all the stats: over 10 years’ of excellence in contemporary European cuisine, some of the best views in Dubai, gorgeous décor, the list goes on.
And so last Thursday, my fiancé and I dressed up, called a cab, and then stepped into the glass elevators that whizzed us up to the 50th floor for an early Valentine’s dinner.
The menu is by no means light on the wallet, but every mouthful is worth it. I promise. We opted for the four-course menu, specially designed for Valentine’s Day (Dhs600 per person for four courses and a glass of bubbly on arrival).
The meal extravaganza kicked off with a hot and cold starter – Norwegian scallops and beef carpaccio (and a splash of aged Pinot Noir, thank you very much).
As the courses stretched on, we came to the main event – I opted for the sea bass while my fiancé chose the veal tenderloin. He’s picky when it comes to meat, more often than not declaring that the cut, cooking method or presentation aren’t up to scratch. I held my breath. He cut a slice. My fork hovered in mid-air. He put the bite to his lips. I watched. He broke out into a broad smile. Winner! In fact, he said it might just be the best he’s had.
Dessert didn’t disappoint either, and the creamy white chocolate ice cream and the dark chocolate crisp with marinated passionfruit and strawberry puree had us practically licking our plates.
All up, we stayed at Vu’s for nearly four hours, enjoying the food, atmosphere and each other’s company. As Dubai buzzed along, 50 floors below us, Vu’s offered us the perfect place to escape for a much-needed romantic night out.
Want to take your other half for a romantic dinner at Vu’s? The Above & Beyond experience is valued at Dhs1,200 for two, and includes four courses, a glass of bubbly on arrival and a surprise gift. To win, simply tell us why you and your partner need to go above and beyond at Vu’s. This prize is to be redeemed throughout the month of February.
Madonna… Is The Show Finally Over?
Monday 6 February 2012
Hands up to watched the American Superbowl overnight. Keep your hand raised if you sat through Madonna’s half-time ‘performance’. And finally, keep that arm up in the air if you think someone should quietly whisper to the superstar “Hey Madge, the show is over, say goodbye”.
The queen of pop wheeled out some pretty big names to help her through her mega-watt show, including the likes of Nicki Manaj, M.I.A and Cee Lo Green, who popped up thoughout the 10-minute production.
It was Cee Lo who hit the high notes in Like A Prayer, while an acrobat whose highly-charged tight-rope performance only highlighted Madonna’s lack of her own choreography and mobility, and it was MIA whose expletive shouted into the audience was the only reminder of the Madonna we used to love (you know, the one who didn’t try so hard). There was a particularly concerning moment when Madge tried to hoist herself onto a higher step, only to fail not once, not twice, but three times before giving it one more heave-ho and climbing to the higher height.
Madonna is 53. Now, before you accuse me of being ageist or calling Queen Madge ‘old’, hear me out. I’m suggesting that at 53, and the mother of a 14-year-old daughter (not to mention 11-year-old Rocco, six-year-old David and four-year-old Mercy), Madonna should perhaps reconsider doing backflips in a g-string in front of millions of people, no? I’m certainly not suggesting she should call time on her career and book herself into a nursing home, but perhaps she should spare a thought for what her grinding and gyrating on live TV will mean for teenage daughter Lourdes at school tomorrow. Just a thought.
So, what do you reckon?

Kim talks to Cosmo Middle East!
Tuesday 31 January 2012
Look who’s on the shelves a day early! Kim chatted to Cosmo Middle East exclusively about her marriage break-down, why she shut down filming for two months, and revealed that she won’t be spending Valentine’s alone. You’re going to want to get your hands on this issue!
Ship Ahoy!
Sunday 29 January 2012
Team Cosmo got our sea legs on today when we boarded the BBQ Donut at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club.
We admit, we kinda thought we’d be sitting back while someone spoon-fed us our lunch… So we were surprised when Editor Kerrie was nominated to be captain, Deputy Editor Aoife was named head chef, Fashion & Beauty Director Chee was in charge of pointing out when we were about to smash into the Floating Bridge, and Art Director Acacia was on cooler box patrol. We. Had. A. Blast!
The lovely people at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club made sure our donut was loaded up with delectable goodies, packed the drinks box for us, fired up the bbq and got the music flowing. All we had to do was throw the food on the hot plate (and look out for previously mentioned bridges).
Choose between the Afternoon Tea package (sandwiches, macaroons, tea and coffee – Dhs950), the Tasty Mix package (salads, nachos, beef burgers, chicken kebabs and sausages – Dhs1,200), the MeditArabian package (Arabic mezze, rub-eye steak, chicken breasts, prawns, fish, veggie kebabs, fruit salad and cakes – Dhs1,550) or the Creek Indulgence (sushi, wagyu steaks, lamb cutlets, salmon steaks, salads, fruit and cakes – Dhs1,950). All packages are inclusive of soft drinks and serve six people.
Want to experience the BBQ Donut for yourself? We have a Tasty Mix package to give away, so you and five friends can take to the seas! To win it, just tell us: who would your five celebrity BBQ Donut guests be, and why? Post your answers here!
